It’s a blend of pot and column still rum, some 90% of which was aged in ex-bourbon barrels, and 10% in Madeira casks (12 years in each).

It remains a rum of enduring popularity, of course, but leaves a deep core rum fun wondering wistfully what it might have been. Presentation wise the Blue Macaw is again present and the typeface etc is the same as the rest of the Doorly’s line up. Notes of red wine and blackberries mingle alongside dark chocolate and some faint notes of marmalade.Nose first: it was a clear, quiet smelling experience, a stripped-down blunted Swiss army knife of almost-sharp twittering flavours led by a buttery salt caramel, burnt sugar, a bit of soft citrus (oranges rather than lemons), unripe cherries, pomegranate, cinnamon and nutmeg.

There are more flavours of caramel, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), citrus / orange peel and buttery oak. The rum is presented in a sturdy card board box that differentiates it from the rest of the line on the shelves.Refreshingly smooth on ice, Foursquare Spiced doesn’t contain the added sugar cane syrup commonly found in many other spiced rums.

The aroma of the rum teases the nose with notes of vanilla, caramel, dried apples, banana, baking spices, cinnamon and subtle smoky oak. As with all Foursquare products there are no hidden nasties in the bottle – just rum and a bit of Caramel colouring which is disclosed on the rear label.I find both this and Doorly’s 12 to be slightly more “wood driven” than some of the Exceptional Cask series. Official sources describe the taste as: light, juicy, with dominant notes of oranges, bananas, vanilla, raisins and oak. Your points are extremely valid, and I would agree with you 100%, except that I felt the same way about the XO way before I got into cask strength rums .
