Inside the large main compartment you have a zipper meshorganiserpocket and this pack, like most of Lowe Alpine packs, is hydration system compatible. The back doesn’t support higher weights as well as one with a metal frame but does keep weight of the pack down.

Once you've got the back length sorted, either by selecting the correct size pack or adjusting the back system, you can begin to follow these simple steps to help achieve a comfortable carry. Your torso length can be found by measuring from your C7 vertebra (the bony protrusion at the back of your neck when looking down) to the height of your iliac crest (top of your hip bones, where you put your hands on your hips).

Remember that your hips carry most of the weight of the pack, so this should be firm but comfortable.

The curvature of the back element does intrude a little into the space available, but the Futura 28 did accommodate my day’s gear – just – which usually includes a DSLR camera. It’s built on a rigid Air Fit 2 back system with vertical frame members either side linked to cross members top and bottom, with a curved rigid plate reinforcing the rucksack. The two zipped mesh pockets on the fins are fairly small – big enough to take a smartphone or a compass.The look and function just as good on the train commute to work as they do peak bagging high up on an alpine climb.

The main compartment is accessible through a top opening, the twin-puller zip of which unfastens to about three-quarters the length of the pack, giving good access. The main compartment is accessed by a double-puller zip, which opens almost the whole length of the rucksack on one side and half-way down on the other.
