About this deal
We don’t realize that there are other sticks that feel a lot more comfortable to use until we try them. Vic Firth is regarded as the leading manufacturer of drumsticks globally, and their sticks are recognised as the very best in the industry. Looking at lots of different models of drumsticks can be confusing and intimidating to say the least.
Nearly all drumstick brands – including the ‘big five’ of Vic Firth, Vater, Zildjian, Regal Tip and Promark – offer a similar range of standard models, which are great starting points. The 5A drumsticks are made from Hickory wood, and they feature a medium taper plus a teardrop wood tip for rich cymbal sounds. The all-round feel and balance of this stick works for drummers who like a heavier stick with a heavier forward feel. The most extreme version of these would be the super short Jojo Mayer sticks (which are super quick and great for drum n bass. Artist signature models come in a huge array of different sizes that fall in between and around all of these base drumstick sizes.
Vater are very specific with the choice of Hickory wood to enable them to produce superior drumsticks. In second place we have the Vater Los Angeles 5A Drum Sticks , and these are very well balanced Hickory wood drumsticks. Many of their artists also play Zildjian-branded sticks, which says a lot about the quality and diversity of the drumsticks they offer.
Even if these aren’t your go-to A-grade stage model, it’s worth grabbing a few pairs of budget sticks as back-ups in case of mid gig or session breakages.Metal drumsticks aren’t great, as they stop the vibrations of the sticks as you strike the drums, and that can often lead to wrist strain. Thickness is the largest contributing factor to the overall feel of the drumstick and will determine which styles of music it’s most suitable for.
